Viator, the Center for Medieval & Renaissance Studies at UCLA's scholarly journal, now in its thirty-ninth year, publishes articles of distinction in any field of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, viewed broadly as the period between late antiquity and the mid-seventeenth century. In keeping with its title, the journal gives special consideration to articles that cross frontiers: articles that focus on meetings between cultures, that pursue an idea through the centuries, that employ the methods of different disciplines simultaneously. Fragments
28 followers
Fragments will provide a forum for dialogue and exchange between scholars in all fields of the humanities and social sciences who study the premodern world. The journal encourages scholars to engage issues of broad interest to colleagues working in other places and times, and to pursue comparative and connective approaches in investigating the past. The editors also invite scholars to explore interdisciplinary approaches to evidence and analysis, such as those that synthesize the insights of textual scholarship and archaeology, or history and sociology. We also welcome articles that introduce methodologically innovative approaches to the shared challenges of interpreting and understanding bodies of premodern evidence that are distinct in kind and quantity from the evidence of the more recent past. The broadest aim of Fragments is to transcend fragmentation: to foster research that overflows the boundaries of various well-established and vital traditions and generates new, integrated ways of thinking about the premodern past.

For nearly fifty years, the Centre européen d’études bourguignonnnes (fourteenth and fifteenth centuries) – known until 1984 as the Centre européen d’études burgondo-médianes – has published annually the acts of the scholarly meetings it organizes in cities within the territory covered by its activities. Its objectives, as stated explicitly in its statutes, are the promotion, the encouragement, and the coordination of historical studies relating to the period of the Dukes of Burgundy of the house of Valois and of the first Hapsburgs, between the North Sea, the Rhine-Danube river system, and the Mediterranean. The themes of these meetings relate to different aspects of the past of these lands, with particular emphasis on the political, economic, cultural and spiritual links that existed between them. Because of their international and multilingual nature (French, German, English and Italian), the volumes of the collection hold a position of choice in the bibliography of studies devoted to this historical period which marks the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the Western world.
